Stump Grinding in Evansville, IN

If you have a stump sitting in your Evansville yard, grinding is almost always the faster, cleaner, and cheaper way to be rid of it than digging or chemical removal. We bring a self-propelled grinder to your property, chip the stump 4–6 inches below the soil line, and leave you with grindings you can rake flat and seed over.

Unlike most local outfits, we publish our pricing below. You should be able to estimate the cost of your stump before anyone shows up.

How stump grinding actually works

A stump grinder is a machine with a rotating steel wheel studded with carbide teeth. It chips the wood away a little at a time, well below ground level, until the stump is a pile of mulch-like grindings. We grind the visible stump plus the root flare — the wide, buttressing roots at the base — because that flare is what re-sprouts and what heaves your mower deck.

For most residential stumps we can be in and out in under an hour. Larger silver maple or oak stumps common in older Evansville neighborhoods take longer, which is why we price by size rather than a flat guess.

Why grinding beats digging or chemicals in the Tri-State

Digging a stump out by hand or with an excavator tears up your lawn, is far more expensive, and on the heavy clay soils common around Vanderburgh County it is brutal work. Chemical stump removers (potassium nitrate) can take 6–12 months and still leave you with a rotting hunk of wood to deal with.

Grinding is done in one visit, leaves the surrounding turf intact, and turns the stump into useful mulch on the spot.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does stump grinding cost in Evansville?

Most single residential stumps fall between our $125 minimum and about $250. We price at $4 per inch measured across the widest point at ground level, with a multi-stump discount. See the pricing table above for the full breakdown.

How deep do you grind the stump?

Standard is 4–6 inches below grade, which is enough to plant grass over. If you plan to replant a tree, lay sod, or pour concrete, tell us and we will grind deeper.

Do you clean up the wood chips?

The grindings are yours to keep as free mulch, and most customers rake them flat and seed over. If you would rather they be hauled away and the hole topped with soil, we offer that as an add-on.

Will grinding kill the roots?

Grinding the stump and root flare stops the tree from re-sprouting for the vast majority of species. Aggressive suckering trees like Bradford pear or tree-of-heaven may send up shoots from far-running roots; we can grind those runs too or point you to a spot treatment.
